I recently returned from another of the long distance pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela. Obviously, it’s a feat of some physical effort, and my knees were grateful that this time it was only 8 days of walking, however, it’s not the mileage that leaves the deepest mark.
‘The Camino’ is a spiritual journey that slowly changes the way you see the world. It is full of awesome vistas, many hills and endless paths, trails and lanes, but as each mile is ticked off your spirit grows. You become increasingly at one with the elements; not battling against them, but working with them and in them. You see how the land’s varying vegetation and wildlife relate to the changing soil. You see evidence of past human lives carved into the landscape and you gradually feel a connectedness to the natural world… and it’s life changing.
Most modern-day pilgrims return home to their 9 to 5, 5 day-a-week grind and the issues of their work soon being to take over their day-to-day thoughts, but something inside has changed. There’s another way. And it might not be possible to access it at the moment, but it’s an aspiration that’s now known and is achievable. Suddenly all of life is different.
The three paintings shown growing in the video clip are inspired by memories the journey. For me, they are far more than a 2D surface. They're created by putting down layers of experience and emotions, which even if not exposed, form a body of substance that tell of hope and opportunity.
