Living in Dorset, England, with its unique land and seascapes, and laced in historic and folk stories, Nick is constantly exposed to creative inspirations. Unsurprisingly, he is drawn to landscapes and predominantly uses oil paints to produce his artworks.

Nick walks many miles, looking and learning from the sights and stories of the land, sea and sky. Later, he will return to a place of interest to explore his experiences further and will record his emotional reactions by sketch or plein aire painting. He will then reflect upon his work and use it in his studio to create either an individual or a series of more considered pieces. His aim is always to capture a sense of time and place as he retells the scene’s narrative.

He often starts larger works with a simple underpainting, to establish tone and balance, and usually goes on to complete the piece with oil paints and mediums. He prefers to work with pallette knives or broad brush strokes to capture narratives with expression rather than detail. For him, this offers a direct and intuitive response to the subject and allows space for the viewer to connect and interact with the piece.

“A great joy, for me, is walking the land, watching its daily changes and absorbing the sights, sounds and emotions”.
